Models of All Sizes Stage Time Square Takeover to Challenge Victoria Secret's Beauty Standards
Earlier this month, women with bodies of all shapes and sizes joined forces to invade New York's busiest part of town, Time Square, to show that there is no single body typology and that cellulite and stretch marks are inherent characteristics of the female body.
#theREALcatwalk was organized by activist of the body positivity movement, Khrystyana, after receiving messages from women feeling discouraged after watching the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
After some thought on how to address this, she decided to create a runway to remind everyone that they are all beautiful. The idea was that "women find other references and that diversity is increasingly accepted", summed up in her Instagram account.
Despite the freezing weather, all participants emanated warmth and positivity. "This is not a protest against Victoria's Secret. It's a showcase to encourage all women to feel good about their bodies. Everyone is welcome to walk," Khrystyana wrote.
In terms of inclusion and diversity in the fashion industry, we still have quite a way to go. But #TheRealCatwalk is helping that mission; once again making visible what so many women are looking for.
